Researchers from the School of Business and Communication Arts, University of Phayao, led by Dr. Warach Matthayomburut, Head of the Doctor of Philosophy Program in Tourism and Hotel Management, recently disseminated knowledge on the “Mae Ing Shibori Natural Dye Innovation” through a podcast hosted by the Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI). The session presented the evolution of the research project from its conceptual foundation and creative design processes to its area-based implementation, reflecting the role of higher education institutions in systematically advancing social innovation.
The project was developed through the integration of academic expertise from the University of Phayao in collaboration with local practitioners, particularly Knowledge Sharing Facilitators (KSFs), who play a critical role in translating academic knowledge into practical applications. It encompasses the development of natural dyes, creative pattern design, and community-based product innovation. These processes significantly contribute to local economic empowerment by enhancing the value of community products, upgrading vocational skills, and generating sustainable income streams. This aligns with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), particularly in promoting inclusive economic growth and supporting grassroots entrepreneurship.
From an innovation perspective, the project demonstrates the development and application of context-appropriate knowledge and technology. This includes the extraction and advancement of natural dyes from local resources, the integration of cultural identity into contemporary design, and the systematic transfer of knowledge to communities. These efforts are consistent with SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), particularly in fostering inclusive innovation and strengthening local production capacities.
Furthermore, the use of natural raw materials and environmentally conscious production processes reflects the principles of SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). The project emphasizes efficient resource utilization, reduced reliance on chemical substances, and environmentally friendly production methods, thereby minimizing ecological impact while enhancing both the ethical and market value of the products.
In the socio-cultural dimension, the initiative plays a significant role in preserving and revitalizing local wisdom by adapting traditional knowledge to contemporary contexts. This contributes to strengthening community identity and resilience, in line with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), particularly by promoting participatory development and safeguarding cultural heritage alongside economic advancement.
The project is supported by the Social Innovation Driving Unit (SID) under the Program Management Unit for Area-Based Development (PMU A), which serves as a key mechanism for fostering collaboration among universities, government agencies, and local stakeholders. This reflects the principles of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), emphasizing multi-sectoral collaboration to advance sustainable development at both local and national levels. The research has also gained international recognition, having been presented in Kaohsiung and awarded a gold medal, demonstrating the global relevance and social impact of Thai research.
The dissemination of knowledge through this podcast represents an important mechanism for public engagement and improved accessibility to research-based knowledge, while promoting lifelong learning in society. It reinforces the role of the University of Phayao as a “University for the Community,” utilizing research as a key instrument for area-based development in accordance with its philosophy of “Wisdom for Community Empowerment,” and advancing sustainable development in a concrete and impactful manner.
