School of Science, University of Phayao Transfers Science and Technology to Community: Workshop on “Compost Bins Based on Scientific Principles”

  Text size

The School of Science, University of Phayao continues to advance the University's motto, “Wisdom for Community Empowerment” by bringing scientific and technological knowledge directly to local communities. The school organized a hands-on workshop titled “Making and Using Compost Bins Based on Scientific Principles” on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the Multi-Purpose Building, Village No. 11, Mae Na Ruea Subdistrict, Mueang Phayao District, Phayao Province.

This activity was conducted under the project “Scaling Up and Integrated Organic Waste Management Model Using Powdered Microbial Innovation for Low-Carbon Communities Development (Mae Na Ruea–Mae Sai)”, led by Assistant Professor Dr. Reungruthai Sirirak, Vice Dean for Research and Innovation, serving as project leader. The initiative received funding support from the “1 Faculty, 1 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) by App Tech Approach” program.

The School of Science places strong emphasis on addressing environmental problems at the source by transforming food waste into value. By applying scientific principles of biodegradation and physical processes, the team transferred technology for constructing and using “Compost Bins” to residents in Mae Na Ruea Subdistrict. This technology not only helps dispose of food waste hygienically, reduces unpleasant odors, and eliminates breeding grounds for pathogens, but also converts food waste into valuable soil nutrients, effectively restoring soil ecosystems at the household level. This represents “science and technology that can be experienced firsthand in every household” while also cultivating “community innovators” who possess the scientific knowledge and understanding needed to disseminate this knowledge and sustainably care for the environment in their own communities.

The lecture and hands-on practical sessions were conducted by a team of expert faculty members and staff from the School of Science, who served as resource speakers, including:

  1. Associate Professor Dr. Arak Klinbumrung, Lecturer, Physics Program

  1. Dr. Niyom Hongsith, Lecturer, Physics Program

  1. Dr. Somrit Un-ai, Lecturer, Physics Program

  1. Mr. Prajak Khattthi, General Administrative Officer

This project implementation serves as concrete proof of success in taking “science, technology, and innovation” out of the laboratory and applying them to solve real problems faced by communities. The initiative is also aligned with SDG13 (Climate Action) and SDG15 (Life on Land).
