Tradition 2026, Honoring Lanna Wisdom and Promoting Sustainable Cultural Heritage of Phayao


The University of Phayao organized the “Tan Khao Mai Sai Bat Luang Ceremony 2026” on 17–18 January 2026 at Kwan Phayao, Wat Tilok Aram, and Wat Sri Khom Kham (Royal Monastery), Mueang Phayao District, Phayao Province. The ceremony was presided over by Associate Professor Supakorn Pongbangpho, Ph.D.President, University of Phayao, with participation from the Governor of Phayao, university executives, government agencies, local communities, and the public. The event aimed to preserve, revive, and promote the valuable Lanna cultural heritage while fostering cultural awareness among youth and society.


The ceremony underscores the University of Phayao’s role in cultural preservation as a core mission of the institution. Associate Professor Dr. Supakorn Phongbangpho emphasized the importance of integrating academic knowledge with local wisdom to ensure the sustainable conservation and transmission of Phayao’s cultural identity in a manner that aligns with contemporary social contexts.


Key activities included the traditional sacred rice stirring ceremony and the unique boat procession offering newly harvested rice to Phra Chao Ton Luang, the revered Buddha image of Phayao with a history of over 535 years. Recognized as a one-of-a-kind cultural tradition in the world, the event reflects faith, unity, and collective efforts to safeguard Lanna cultural heritage. The ceremony was also held in celebration of the 16th anniversary of the University of Phayao and dedicated as a royal merit-making activity in honor of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother.
