RS2GH Research Group Engineering UP Establishes an International Engineering–AI Research Network in China and Hong Kong

The Remote Sensing, Geomatics, Geotechnology, Hydraulics (RS2GH) Research Unit, School of Engineering, University of Phayao, led by Associate Professor Dr. Suriyavut Praai, together with the research team comprising Assistant Professor Dr. Thanet Thongdetsri, Assistant Professor Dr. Thanakarn Suangun, and Dr. Buntueng Yana, embarked on an academic and research networking visit to the People’s Republic of China and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) during 22–30 October 2025.

The visit aimed to exchange advanced knowledge and establish international research collaborations in the fields of Geotechnical Engineering and Artificial Intelligence (AI) through engagements with leading universities and research experts across three institutions:

• Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, China

The research team participated in a series of academic lectures and research presentations, engaging in in-depth discussions with School members and graduate students specializing in geotechnical engineering and AI applications for civil engineering. The dialogue contributed to broadening perspectives and deepening understanding of emerging trends in international research and innovation.

• The University of Hong Kong (HKU), Hong Kong SAR

The delegation met with Professor Clarence E. Choi to explore potential collaborative research directions on landslide and debris flow disaster management, emphasizing the integration of advanced technologies and AI-based solutions for geotechnical engineering applications.

• The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Hong Kong SAR

At PolyU, the team met with Professor Zhen-Yu Yin and his research group to share experiences and present innovative research concepts involving AI integration in geotechnical engineering. These discussions laid the foundation for long-term research collaboration and joint academic activities in the near future.

Key Outcomes of the Visit:

• Strengthened international academic and research networks with globally recognized scholars.

• Established a framework for future joint research projects and exchange programs for researchers and graduate students of the School of Engineering.

• Enhanced the global research profile and academic visibility of the School of Engineering, University of Phayao.

• Inspired the development of innovative ideas and new knowledge in engineering and technology.

This visit exemplifies the commitment of the School of Engineering, University of Phayao, to advancing research excellence and achieving international standards, while positioning itself as a knowledge hub in engineering innovation. Through the integration of advanced technologies and AI-driven approaches, the School aims to contribute to the sustainable development of communities, society, and the environment in the years to come.
